Attic Insulation in Tanglewood, Fort Worth
Top Gun Insulation has completed attic insulation retrofits for homeowners in Tanglewood, the established neighborhood in southwest Fort Worth known for its mature oaks and mid-century ranch homes. These are real Tanglewood homes where our crew finished the work. If your house sits on one of these tree-lined streets and the upstairs or back bedrooms never quite cool down in August, the attic is the first place we look.

Attic insulation retrofits for Tanglewood homes
A retrofit means bringing an existing attic up to where it should be, without remodeling the house. Many homes in Tanglewood were built decades ago, when attic insulation was thinner and building practices were different. Over the years that original insulation settles, gets compressed by storage and foot traffic, and gets disturbed every time a cable, duct or light fixture is added. What is left often covers the ceiling unevenly, with thin spots over the rooms that feel the worst.
On a retrofit we start by looking at what is actually up there: the depth and condition of the insulation, gaps around ceiling penetrations, the attic hatch, ventilation, and anything that should not be there, such as damaged or contaminated material. Then we explain what we found and what it would take to fix it, before any work starts.
Blown-in insulation or spray foam for a Tanglewood attic?
Most single-story ranch attics are good candidates for blown-in insulation. Loose fill goes in quickly, fills around joists, wiring and corners, and can be brought to an even depth across the whole attic floor. It is usually the most direct way to add insulation to an attic that already has some.
Spray foam insulation works differently: it insulates and air-seals in one step, and is often applied to the underside of the roof deck. It can make sense when ductwork and equipment sit in the attic, when a homeowner is finishing space, or when air leakage is the main problem. Open cell and closed cell foam each have their place. We will tell you which one fits your attic and why, rather than steering every house to the same product.
When old insulation should come out first
Sometimes the right first step is insulation removal. Insulation that is wet, matted, contaminated by pests, or mixed with debris does not perform, and adding a new layer on top of it can hide the problem. Removing it gives a clean attic floor, lets us seal gaps that were buried, and means the new insulation can do its job. If your attic does not need it, we will say so.
Air sealing and attic ductwork
Insulation slows heat, but it does not stop air. In many older houses, conditioned air escapes into the attic through gaps around recessed lights, plumbing and wiring holes, top plates and the attic hatch, and hot attic air finds its way back down. Sealing those gaps before new insulation goes in is one of the most useful parts of a retrofit, because once the attic floor is covered they are hard to reach.
Many Tanglewood homes also have their ductwork running through the attic. When we are up there, we look at how the ducts are routed, whether they are buried, exposed or crushed, and whether the insulation plan needs to work around them. If something about the ductwork needs a heating and cooling contractor, we will point it out rather than guess.
Radiant barrier and a cooler attic
Under a North Texas roof, the attic can get far hotter than the outdoor air on a summer afternoon. A radiant barrier reflects much of that roof heat before it reaches the attic floor. Paired with the right amount of attic insulation, it can help keep upstairs rooms and attic ductwork from working as hard. We will tell you whether it is worth it for your house.
Your local insulation contractor from Fort Worth
Top Gun Insulation is based in Fort Worth, at 1943 Golden Heights Rd #300, and serves homeowners and businesses across North Texas. When you call, you talk to the people who do the work. A typical visit looks like this:
- Look first. We inspect the attic and tell you what we see, including what does not need fixing.
- A clear scope. You get a plain explanation of the options for your attic: add insulation, remove and replace, air-seal, radiant barrier, or a combination.
- Clean work. The crew protects your home, completes the job, and walks you through what was done.
The U.S. Department of Energy publishes recommended attic insulation levels by climate region. On a Tanglewood retrofit we measure what you have now and tell you how much more it takes to get there, so you can make the call with real numbers in front of you.
Common questions from Tanglewood homeowners
How do I know if my attic needs more insulation? Rooms that run hotter than the rest of the house, a system that runs constantly in summer, and insulation you can see the ceiling joists through are all common signs. The only way to know for sure is to look.
Do you work on older homes? Yes. Retrofits on established homes are a large part of what we do, and older attics often have the most to gain.
Do you serve the neighborhoods around Tanglewood? Yes. We work throughout Fort Worth and the DFW area. See all of our service areas.
